Why do we write things down?

The reason we write things down is pretty obvious to me; it's so we don't forget what we have planned. How much more obvious can it get; sometimes we forget things and sometimes we don't. No matter how good your memory is you should always write stuff down just in case it slips your mind. I'm sure it has happened to all of us one time or another where we know we have something to do, but forget for some reason or another to do it. It has happened to me several times where I had a task to do, but it slipped my mind while I was performing another task and I couldn't remember what it was I had to do. Sometimes things happen to slip my mind as well and it will come back to me a day or two days later. If you write things down it will gurantee that This is why it is always a great idea to write down whatever it is you have to do, so you don't forget.........

  1. I wonder if writing is something of a mental crutch? In pre-literate societies, people had awesome memories. The Odessey and Illiad by Homer were originally oral works. The poets that recited them memorized hundreds, even thousands of lines. Stage actors are some of the few that do this today.

I wonder if writing frees us from such tedious memorization, or does it make us mentally lazy, like our bodies that get out of shape because we have cars and elevators and fun things to do in a chair (Computers, music, video games)?
